From gastronomic adventures and melodic performances to artistic creations and team sports, the freshman orientation camp has presented a plethora of diverse experiences to the newcomers. In this "safe" environment, the two-week span of activities provides a seamless avenue for them to acquaint themselves with the community and forge connections amongst themselves. As they explored the school's setting, they received guidance not only from their teachers but also from "senior members" and alumni. Qinglan (BCIS Class of 2022), who returned from the University of Cambridge to BCIS, to lead engaging classroom activities during these two weeks, offering her first-hand support and guidance. Additionally, under the mentorship of current High School students Amelia and Jiarong, the two pioneers of student-led projects, the new students had the opportunity to engage in the community's recycled coffee grounds initiative, tour the ecological garden, and assist with gardening tasks. The camaraderie among peers developed naturally. Through the vivid explanations of older brothers and sisters, new members gained an understanding of the various project scenarios that the BCIS community offers for students.

On the cusp of entering Grade 10, Yuchen shared his insights, "Physical education at BCIS is an entirely different experience. I delved into the realm of teamwork." Yuchen's newfound passion for rugby, a sport he discovered and excelled in within the team, epitomized his journey over the past two weeks. Judy, a 7th grader, echoed a similar sentiment, saying, "This is the first time I've created something entirely my own in art class." Judy found herself liberated and invigorated in the creative space provided by her teacher.

Parents play a crucial role in the BCIS learning community, evident in a parent-sharing workshop where experiences were exchanged.  The mothers whose children joined BCIS in 4th and 9th grade respectively, shared their children's transition experiences. Addressing parents' common concerns, the parent reassured them, "You need not fret about your child's social interactions at BCIS. Particularly in the PYP inquiry-based curriculum, numerous projects necessitate collaboration among children, fostering an environment conducive to communication and self-expression."

At the culmination of the camp, the students organized an achievements exhibition at LeLe Center, resembling an interactive museum where individuals strolled among the projects. Aligned with the IB inquiry theme of "Who I Am," the new members were tasked with independently conceiving a project that encapsulates their essence. An exquisitely vibrant ukulele, a series of comics, intricately crafted artwork... students embarked on their unique avenues of self-expression, reflecting their age and individuality. At each station, spirited exchanges unfolded among students as they delved into the theme of "Who I Am."

Zirou divulged that due to the novelty of such an independently driven personal project, she encountered challenges. "By Thursday, most of my classmates had already finalized their projects, whereas I had merely formulated a title for my poster." Progressing from conceptualizing the poster's elements to procuring materials, sketching, and eloquently articulating her self-concept, Zirou recognized that the seemingly straightforward poster design necessitated substantial contemplation to critically assess her own identity. Amidst a kaleidoscope of personal experiences, she employed black lines to symbolize her current state——a tangle of thoughts about the future. Yet, she confidently declared, "Despite occasional uncertainties about the future, I believe this mental labyrinth will give birth to innovative ideas."

In the spirited discussions among students, one can readily discern their newfound confidence in self-expression and their fervor for exploration——qualities that potentially lay the foundation for embracing challenges as they prepare to assimilate into this personalized exploration-focused learning community. We hold firm that these members have been equipped with the indispensable skills to perpetually broaden the scope of "Who I Am" within their future studies at BCIS. We eagerly anticipate sharing the genuine adaptation experiences of the students later, we invite you to stay tuned to our stories and witness their transformative odyssey of growth in BCIS!
